Anyone with symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) should self-isolate immediately and book a test.
what test will you be offered?
If you have symptoms, you should book a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test. PCR tests involve taking a swab of your throat and nose, and are used to detect the genetic material of the virus. They are a very reliable way to identify whether your symptoms are coronavirus or not.
Who can get a PCR test
Anyone with symptoms of coronavirus should undergo a PCR test. These symptoms are:
a high temperature or fever
a new persistent cough
loss or change in the sense of smell or taste
A new, persistent cough means a cough lasting more than an hour, or coughing up three or more times in 24 hours. If you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual.
You should get tested within the first 3 days after symptoms appear, although the test is effective for up to 5 days.
You should not have a PCR test within 90 days of a positive result.
Get PCR test done if there are no symptoms
You should also book a test if:
you are a close contact who has not been fully vaccinated
You are self-isolating and intend to apply for a self-isolation grant
You are in a high-risk group that is prioritized for coronavirus treatment and you have a positive LFD test result
You have been asked to have a test by your local council, health protection team, or health care professional
You have 2 or more zero LFD results
What is meant by complete vaccination?
If you are a non-fully vaccinated close contact and you have already tested positive on a PCR test in the past 90 days, you should not have a PCR test unless you develop new symptoms yourself.
If you do not have symptoms and have not been asked to book a test for any of these reasons, you can have a Lateral Flow Device (LFD) test.
priority test
Certain groups having symptoms of coronavirus will be given priority for PCR tests during peak periods.
You will be given priority for a PCR test if you:
an essential worker
at highest risk
eligible for new coronavirus treatment
People in the priority group should specify the same when asked in the PCR booking portal.
